Biography: Initially taught by his father, Cornelius David Kreighoff entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Germany around 1830. After a brief stay in the United States serving in the army, he moved to Montreal. From 1844 to1845, Kreighoff studied in Paris and then returned to Canada and traveled throughout the country. He then moved back to Europe where he painted Canadian scenes in Paris and Munich. After finally settling in Quebec, Kreighoff continued to work on his landscapes, scenes of French-Canadian and Native American life, and portraits in a style that resembled the Dutch School.
