Biography: The Kleophrades Painter was a prolific artist who worked in Athens. He was probably a student of Euthymides who was a member of the red-figure group, the Pioneers. In addition to the red-figure technique, he also painted in the black-figures method, most of these executed on Panathenaic amphorai. The Kleophrades painter preferred large vases, painted in traditional styles and scenes with an emphasis on the Trojan War. His name is derived from the potter’s signature, Klephrades on one of his cups.
