Biography: Sir Phillip King gained his reputation as a leading avant-garde sculptor at the New Generation exhibit in 1965. At that time, he was working in slick materials such as plastic or fiberglass that were painted in bright hues and often cone-shaped. Later in his career, he switched to wood, steel, and other rough materials. King represented Britain along with Bridget Riley at the Venice Biennale of 1968. From 1980 to 1990, he taught sculpture at the Royal College of Art. Additionally, in 1999, he was elected president of the Royal Academy.
