Biography: Originally a law student, Anselm Kiefer switched to art in 1965 and held his first solo exhibit in 1970. He studied under Joesph Beuys from 1970 to 1971, but did not conform to either the Minimalist or Conceptualist style that was developing at the time. Instead Kiefer created massive and dark paintings that explored German folklore and inspired by Caspar David Friedrich. In addition to paintings, Kiefer also produced drawings, prints, books and engravings.
