Biography: Although little is known about Adriaen Thomasz Key’s training, he is thought to have studied under Willem Key, who he was either related to or took his name. He became a master in Antwerp’s Guild of Saint Luke in 1568. Even after Catholic Spain conquered Antwerp in 1585, Key remained a registered Calvinist. He was admired for his portraits, his sitters including William the Silent, Prince of Orange and count of Nassau. He later painted Antwerp citizens in the influence of Antonis Mor. Key also painted altarpieces for Antwerp churches in the style of Willem Key and woodcuts that resembled the work of Italiante artist Frans Floris.
