Biography: Jean Jouvenet was born into a family of artist in Rouen, France. In 1661, he moved to Paris to work in the workshop of LeBrun. His early work resembled that of his master. Although he worked on a number of decorative projects during his lifetime, he is remembered for h is religious paintings. He created numerous altarpieces for churches in and around Paris. Later in his career, Jouvenet’s work adopted a Baroque style, perhaps encouraged by the Academie Royale. In 1713, his right hand became paralyzed, but he learned to paint with his left.
