Biography: Gerrit van Honthorst studied in his hometown of Utrecht under Bloemart, and also trained in Italy, admiring the work of Caravaggio. In 1620, he became the Dean of the Guild of St.Luke and was employed by Queen Elizabeth of Bohemia to teach her children to draw. After meeting her brother, Charles I, Honthorst painted the English royal family and court. As well as portraiture, he also painted genre scenes, often of taverns and their customers in Holland.
