Biography: After an apprenticeship to engraver, Ellis Gamble, William Hogarth began his own business in 1720. He took draughtsmanship lessons from Sir James Thornhill, although he had originally intended to pursue copper-plate engravings. In 1724, Hogarth began creating plates for booksellers. He then created individual prints before beginning a career as a portraitist in 1730. Several years after taking up painting, he began to create the satirical looks at society’s life and morals for which he is known.
