Biography: Joris Hoefnagel was born to rich wealthy parents and was thus able to travel to England, France, and Spain during his youth. While on these trips, he produced topographical drawings that were later used as models for an atlas. In 1577, Hoefnagel moved south with cartographer Abraham Ortelius and was hired as a court artist to Albert V, duke of Bavaria. He completed a multi-volume book of natural history miniatures around this time. In 1591, Hoefnagel was appointed court artist to the Holy Roman Emperor, Rudolf II.
