Biography: Born in Amsterdam as Meindert Lubbertszoon, Hobbema studied under Jacob van Ruysdael and painted his landscapes in a similar technique. Hobbema did not receive a lot of attention or praise during his career, although his greatest piece is said to be The Avenue, Middelharris. Because his paintings did not sell, Hobbema was forced to take on a different occupation, and his work gradually declined from that point on.
