Biography: Born in Germany, Sir Hubert von Herkomers ettled in England in 1857 with his father and became a British citizen. He made a name for himself with his patriotic painting, The Last Muster—Sunday at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea. Afterwards, he became a sought-after portrait painter. Today, his most recognized works are his paintings with social messages that at one time were unique in English art. Herkomer also composed operas, designed the sets, and performed. From 1883 to 1904, he was the head of an art school in Bushey and he also wrote several books including the autobiographical work, My School and My Gospel in 1908.
