Biography: Dutch born, Maerten van Heemskerck was inspired early on by the Italianate style of Jan van Scorel’s work. He traveled to Rome and sketched all of the art he could absorb, including ancient architecture, medieval monuments, and frescoes by Raphael and Michelangelo. Heemskerck moved to Haarlem in 1536 and was given commissions for large altarpieces, portraits, and small religious and mythological paintings. Around 1567 he began printmaking and the pieces he created during this time exuded strong influences on later Dutch artists including Rembrandt.
