Biography:
Francis Gruber was a French painter who was known for his mature and melancholy style. Initially his work was more imaginative, but he began painting models and still lifes after 1933. One of Gruber’s most memorable works was the painting Job, completed in 1944 for the Salon d’Automne. It depicted oppressed and suffering people who dealt with many of the same trials as biblical character, Job. Because of this and other works, Gruber is considered the father of the Miserabiliste variety of French painting. He died at the age of thirty-six from tuberculosis.
