Biography: Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson was the illegitimate son of Dr. Trioson and originally trained to become an architect. After studying painting under David, Girodet won the Prix de Rome in 1789. His painting technique was similar to those of the Neo-classicists, however his subject matter was primarily Romantic. Because of his admiration of Correggio and other Mannerists, Girodet also painted female nudes. Despite his success in his career, his difficult personality caused controversy with his portrait sitters and his colleagues. After inheriting a large sum, Girodet abandoned his artwork.
