Biography: Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey first studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and began using the daguerreotype process in 1841. He may have learned the technique from its inventor, Louis-Jacques-Mande Daguerre or from Hippolyte Bayard. Girault de Prangey also studied Ancient Near East architecture and toured Greece, Egypt, Turkey, Syria, and Palestine in 1842. He then returned to his home in Langres, France and made watercolor studies and small lithographs of his photographs. His work was not discovered until thirty years after his death in the 1920’s.
