Biography:
Francois Girardon’s early training was supported by the chancellor of the Academie Royale who funded his education in Rome. He began working with Charles Le Brun and was given royal commissions including restoring antiques, decorating royal ships, and developing and sculptural plans. He became chancellor of the Academie Royale in 1695. Girardon was also an avid art collector, owning around eight hundred sculptures at the time of his death.
