Biography: Born in Rouen as Jean Louis Andre Theodore Géricault, he studied under Carle Vernet and Pierre Guérin, but had a deep admiration for Rubens. In 1812, Géricault exhibited his Wounded Cuirassier, a portrait of a cavalry officer. He studied for three years in Italy beginning in 1816, and then returned to Paris to paint his most famous large-scale pieces. Géricault died after falling from a horse in 1824.
