Biography: Arnold Genthe was born in Germant and moved to the United States in 1895 to work as a tutor. While living in San Francisco, he began photographing and publishing some of his images in local magazines. He then opened his own studio that did portraits of local and visiting celebrities. In 1906, Genthe’s work and studio were destroyed in the earthquake and fire. He rebuilt his business and then in 1908, spent six months documenting his visit to Japan. In 1911, Genthe moved to New York and focused on portraiture and dance photography.
