Biography: Henry Fuseli was born in Zurich, Switzerland. Although his father was an amateur painter, Fuseli originally joined the seminary and was ordained as a minister in the Swiss Reformed Church in 1761. Under the encouragement of Sir Joshua Reynolds, Fuseli began to paint in 1768, spending eight years in Italy admiring the religious work of Michelangelo. Fuseli moved to London in 1778, exhibiting his most famous painting, The Nightmare at the Royal Academy in 1782. In Fuseli’s work he tended to favor dramatic scenes of terror, imagination, and eroticism.
