Biography: Born in Scotland, Ian Fairweather studied at the Slade School of Art in London before traveling extensively throughout the world. He served in the British Army in India during World War II and then settled in Australia in 1943. In 1952, he traveled from Darwin to Indonesia on self-made raft and then eventually moved to Bribie Island off the north coast of Australia. Fairweather painted portraits, landscapes and genre scenes primarily in gouache or synthetic polymers. His work has a Chinese influence, often containing Oriental calligraphy. Towards the end of his career, he created very successful abstract paintings.
