Biography: William Dyce spent the majority of his career in London working as a painter, designer, and administrator. He visited Italy twice in the 1820’s where Renaissance painting and the work of the Nazarenes influenced him. After working for a short time as a portraitist in Edinburgh, Dyce moved to London to work for the new School of Design. He also traveled across France and Germany to other state art schools to learn their teaching methods. In 1840, he was appointed superintendent of the School of Design, but resigned three years later. Dyce’s personal body of work included frescoes, murals, and easel paintings of religious subjects
