Biography: Etienne Doirat was born into a family of Parisian cabinetmakers (ebenistes) and learned the trade from his relatives. His furniture is distinctive in that it was stamped with his name, an uncommon practice of Doirat’s time. He built armoires, corner cupboards, tables, and commodes in exotic wood. He also incorporated decorative bronze elements, but did not create them in his own workshop. Doirat opened a furniture store in 1731 on the rue Saint Honore, which was known for its many luxurious dealers. His soon took over the shop upon Doirat’s death in 1732.
