Biography: After visiting Europe several times during the early 20th century, American painter and illustrator, Charles Demuth returned to the United States with a strong interest in avant-garde art. Beginning in 1916, his style reflected the influence of Cubism, as seen in his architectural paintings. He became a leading artist of the Precisionist movement and produced pieces that he called “portrait posters.” His famous painting I Saw the Figure Five in Gold is an example of one of these works and was created as a tribute to poet, William Carlos Williams. Due to illness in his early life, Demuth was incapacitated with diabetes for most of his final decade.
