Biography:
Frederick Holland Day founded the Copeland and Day publishing firm in 1884 that printed small-editions of English literature such as Rossetti and Wilde. The firm published ninety-eight books and periodicals but was never financially successful. Despite this financial situation, Day came from previous wealth and was not affected by the failure. In 1886, he began to photograph and wrote about photography’s status as a fine art. Day’s photographs depicted untraditional views of religious subjects and also male nudity, which created a lot of controversy. Because he worked in the Pictorialist style, he preferred platinum prints. He abandoned his hobby during World War I when there was a shortage on materials.
