Biography: Born into a lower class French family, Honoré Daumier retained contempt for aristocracy for his entire life. His original job was in a bailiff’s office, working with the bureaucrats and lawyers whom he also detested. He learned the technique of lithography and began working as a political cartoonist. His strong dislike for the social politics of his time made for very witty and stinging cartoons that were published in Le Charivari and La Caricature. After being imprisoned for an offensive cartoon of Louis-Phillipe, Daumier began focusing his cartoons on Parisian social life and aristocracy. His paintings were unknown during his lifetime, but dealt with the same subject matter produced in a style similar to Realism. Although he was an acquaintance of Realist painter, Courbet, his paintings were uniquely created and strongly influenced by his graphic work.
