Biography:
Born in America, Thomas Crawford moved to Rome in 1835 to study with Thorvaldsen. Despite his relocation to Italy, he made frequent visits to the United States and gained a good reputation as a neoclassical sculptor in his native country. In 1855, Crawford began one his most recognized works, Armed Liberty, a bronze statue that rests atop the dome of the Capital in Washington D.C.
