Biography: Josse van Craesbeeck originally worked as a baker in a prison in Antwerp. When Adriaen Brouwer, a well-known local painter, was imprisoned for tax debts, he met his future pupil, Craesbeeck. Not long after, he enrolled in the Guild of Saint Luke as a baker and a painter. Almost two decades later, he moved to Brussels and became a master in their painter’s guild and a town representative. Craesbeeck painted mostly small genre scenes of peasants and later the middle class life.
