Biography: Scottish painter, James Cowie worked in a style uncharacteristic of other 20th century artists of his nationality. His works were executed in a strong, linear style and required extensive preliminary sketching and several years to complete. He was inspired by the compositions of the Old Masters and often used their examples as a starting point, later infusing subjects from his everyday life. Cowie taught at several Scottish institutions were he instructed students such as Robert Coloquhoun, Robert MacBryde, and Joan Eardley.
