Biography:
Thomas Couture studied under Gros and Delacroix before he earned his reputation as a historical and portrait painter. At the 1847 Salon, his painting The Romans of the Decadence was first shown. It made a startling first impression but later was criticized as a bad example of academic painting. His lesser-known works were more successful but perhaps his greatest role in art history was that of a teacher to famous pupils such as Manet, Fantin-Latour, and Puvis de Chavannes.
