Biography: Son of a painter, Guillaume Courtois moved from Franch to Italy with his teenage brother at the age of seven. His brother drew military campaigns, which they followed across the country. The pair then studied in Bologna, Florence, and Siena before arriving in Rome in 1638. Courtois learned his trade by copying the works of Giovanni Lanfranco and Andrea Sacchi and drawing nude models. In 1656, he studied under Pietro da Cortona while painting a fresco in the Roman palazzo. The next year he completed his most important commission, a set of frescoes for a Roman church that were dramatic and contained more natural figure drawing. Courtois also made many red-chalk, pen, ink, and wash drawings that were preparations for his paintings.
