Biography: After studying in London, John Sell Cotman returned home to work as a watercolorist and eventually join the Norwich School. In addition, Cotman also created successful oil paintings while living in Great Yarmouth from 1811 to 1823. As a result of poor sales, he returned to London and was employed as a drawing master at King’s College. His landscapes are known for their advanced use of light and shade, as well as their starkness.
