Biography: Philippe de Champaigne began working with Nicolas Poussin at the age of nineteen, decorating the Luxembourg Palace. Not long after he obtained patrons such as Cardinal Richelieu, King Louis XIII, and Marie de Medici. He soon became the royal painter for the latter and began painting multiple royal portraits, religious works for churches and private worshipers, and decorative projects. Champaigne was a founder of the Academie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture and became a professor there in 1653. His religious works are identified by its vivid colors, large figures, and muted compostions, all inspired by Peter Paul Rubens, and Simon Vouet.
