Biography: Cornelis Janssens van Ceulen’s parents fled the Netherlands and moved to London in order to escape religious persecution. He became a portrait painter in London in 1618 and signed several hundred paintings. Anthony van Dyck influenced his work, but he also retained a distinctively conservative approach that was admired by his high society clientele. With the outbreak of the English Civil war in 1643, Janssens returned to the Netherlands, traveling through Middelburg, Amsterdam, The Hague and Utrecht respectively.
