Biography: After studying at the California School of Design, Emily Carr traveled to England to train at the Westminster School of Art. She returned to her home in Vancouver for a brief period before moving to Paris in 1910. There she studied the works of Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, and Fauvists and exhibited at the Salon d’Autumne in 1911. Upon her return to Canada, Carr began studying the art of Native American cultures on the Pacific Northwest. She devoted her career to this interest, not producing any paintings for fifteen years. In 1927, she met the Group of Seven artists in Ottawa and began painting again. Ten years later, she suffered a heart attack and worked as an author until her death in 1945.
