Biography: Sir Anthony Caro first studied to become an engineer at Cambridge University. He served in the navy during World War II before studying sculpture in London beginning in 1951. Two years later, he was employed as an assitant to Henry Moore. Caro's early work was done in clay. However, after visiting the United States and encountering the influence of David Smith, he began producing abstract metal sculptures. From 1953 to 1979, Caro taught at St. Martin's School of Art in London. His later work includes massive metal sculptures and bronze figures.
