Biography: Louis de Carmontelle was a self-taught artist who began his career teaching upper-class children. He worked as a topographical artist during the Seven Years’ War and also drew portraits and caricatures of the soldiers. In 1763, he was given the position as lecteur (reader) to duc d’Orleans, the son of Louis-Philippe. He also founded a literary solon at the Palais Royale. Carmontelle used his art for entertainment purposes at court gatherings. He painted transparent panoramas and displayed them in a lantern. He also produced portraits on the spot, and in his lifetime made over 750 of them. Carmontelle designed the Jardin de Monceau in Paris.
