Biography: Jan van de Cappelle was only a part-time painter, as most of his time was spent running his father’s business. As a result, his paintings are quite rare. He favored water landscapes, often rivers and harbors but sometimes beach scenes. He also did a few winter landscapes. His paintings emphasized clouds and their reflections on the water. He rarely dated his pieces, but they can be distinguished through his gradual change from a gray palette to a more colorful one. Upon his death, Van de Cappelle’s estate contained over 90,000 guilders, substantial real estate, and a large yacht. He also obtained one of the best art collections of his time including paintings by Van Goyen, Hals, and Rubens. He also owned over 500 drawings by his friend Rembrandt and nine paintings and 1,300 drawings by his teacher, Simon de Vlieger.
