Biography: Edward Burra studied at Chelsea Polytechnic and the Royal Academy of Art in London beginning in 1921. He then traveled across Europe and North America, absorbing the ideas of the Surrealists and Dadaists. Burra’s paintings are very vibrant and active, which is thought to be a caused by his frequent illness. His favorite subjects were found in nightclubs, bars, and brothels. However as he matured, he began focusing on political issues such as the Spanish Civil War and WWII. Later in his life, he painted mostly landscapes and still-lifes.
