Biography: Theodore de Bry was born into an affluent Protestant family in Liege where he was trained as a goldsmith and engraver. In 1570, he was forced to flee the Netherlands because of religious persecution. He went to Strasbourg, de Bry left for England in 1586 where he made some of his most famous engravings. Back in Germany, de Bry’s family opened a publishing business in Frankfurt. De Bry returned there in 1589 and illustrated ten volumes of American travel books that were published between 1590 and 1618. He also created engraved portraits of famous men, many other book illustration and prints, and designs for jewelry and goldsmith work.
