Biography: Born in Florence, Filippo Brunelleschi was an incredibly talented and famous architect who assisted in the creation of the Renaissance style. He began his training as a goldsmith, participating in the competition to produce the doors of the Florence Baptistery from 1401 to 1402. However, he was one of the many artists who were defeated by Ghiberti in that contest. Following his defeat, Brunelleschi abandoned sculpture for architecture, producing the dome Florence’s cathedral from 1420 to 1436. He was also a pioneer of perspective, exhibiting two paintings in 1413 that demonstrated the technique.
