Biography: A student of Jean Fouquet, Jean Bourdichon served as court painter to the four French kings, Louis XI, Charles VIII, Louis XII, and Francois I. He designed coins, stained glass windows, and illuminated manuscripts as well as creating his own paintings. Charles VIII gave Bourdichon a workshop at his palace in Plessis-les-Tours, where the artist soon became an affluent landowner. Although only one of his panel paintings remains, Bourdichon was a popular artist, known to receive up to forty commissions per year.
