Biography: Ilya Bolotowsky was born in Russia but moved to New York in 1923, gaining citizenship six years later. After encountering Mondrian’s work in 1933, he began painting abstract, geometrical works. In 1936, Bolotwosky became a founding member of the American Abstract Artists. Later that year, he was commissioned to produce one of the first abstract murals for the Williamsburg Housing Project in New York City.
