Biography: Flemish painter, Joachim Beuckelear first studied under his uncle, Pieter Aertsen. Following in his mentor’s footsteps, he first painted kitchen and market scenes. Nearly all of these small paintings contained some kind of religious allusion in the background or a moral theme. Beuckelear also created landscapes and riverbanks with many figures and a strong atmosphere. His work was influential in Northern Italy, especially admired by Annibale Carracci. Because he was able to paint many pictures, the market soon became saturated with his work, thus Beuckelear’s paintings were not valuable until after his death.
