Biography: Born in Canada, Edward Mitchell Bannister moved to Boston in 1848 to work as a ship’s cook. He originally pursued an acting career, joining the black theatre clubs, The Crispus Attucks Choir and the Histrionics Club. He married a wealthy woman, Christina Carteaux, which granted him the freedom to explore his artistic talents and attend the Lowell Institute. Bannister and his wife moved to Providence, Rhode Island in 1870, where he continued to paint rural landscapes and genre scenes.
