Biography: Baccio Bandinelli’s father was a successful goldsmith who exposed him to the work of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. He was known for his mastery of disegno, the combination of design and drawing. He was also a respected teacher, founding one of the first academies at the Vatican in 1531 and another in Florence two decades later. Despite these achievements, Bandinelli was despised by his colleagues for being selfish, greedy, and a social-climber. He used his artistic ability to achieve wealth and nobility rather than dedicating his efforts to quality. He wasted time trying to procure commissions from the wealthy Medici family, and then poorly created them.
