Biography: Giacomo Balla studied art in his birthplace, Turin, Italy, before traveling to Paris in 1901, encountering the Impressionism and Divisionism. Balla signed the Futurist Manifesto in 1910, and began creating paintings that reflected the spirit of growth and movement of the early 20th century. By the 1920’s, Futurism had lost its appeal and novelty, and became associated with fascism. As a result, Balla turned towards abstraction in the 1930’s.
