Biography: Nicknamed Baciccio, Giovanni Battista Gaulli first studied in Genoa and admired the work of Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, and Bernardo Strozzi. After the plague killed his family in 1657, he moved to Rome and became Gianlorenzo Bernini’s protégé. Later upon viewing Correggio’s works in Parma in 1669, Baciccio’s style changed to adopt a more gentle and illusionary approach. From 1672 to 1683, he collaborated with Bernini on the ceiling in the church of Il Gesu in Rome. Baciccio also produced altarpieces and mythological imagery and was commissioned to paint portraits of seven popes.
