Biography: Pier Alari-Bonacolsi, nicknamed Antico, originally worked in his father’s trade as a butcher. He then trained as a goldsmith and began sculpting in 1479. Antico’s antique-style sculptures became very popular in the Mantua court. He lived at Gianfrancesco’s palace beginning in the 1480’s where he made bronze reproductions of ancient Roman sculptures for his master’s younger brother, Bishop Ludovico Gonazaga. Later, Antico worked for Isabella d’Este and became her artistic advisor in 1506.
