Biography: After training in Normandy alongside his brother, Francois, Michel Anguier began working in a sculptor’s workshop at the young age of fifteen. Over a decade later, the brothers moved to Rome where Michel stayed long after Francois left him, studying classical sculpture and working under Alessandro Algardi. This period left Anguier with a deep admiration for the classical Baroque style that was evident in his work. From 1649 to 1652, the Anguier brothers worked on the Montmorency tomb in Moulins. Afterwards, Michel began working for Queen Anne of Austria, decorating her apartments in the Louvre. He also created numerous sculptures and architectural decorations for buildings throughout France. In the 1670’s, Anguier taught at the Academie Royale in Paris.
