Biography: Born in the village of Castagno outside of Florence, Andrea di Bartolo di Bargilla took the name of his hometown when he became a successful painter. Although nothing is known of his training, his career began in 1440 when he painted frescoes at the Palazzo del Podesta. These works were since destroyed, thus his earliest surviving works are located at the church of S. Zaccaria in Venice, painted in 1442. Andrea returned to Florence in 1444 and began working on his greatest masterpiece, a series of frescoes depicting Christ’s Passion for the monastery of S. Apollonia. According to Giorgio Vasari, Castagno murdered colleague Domenico Veneziano. However in the late 19th century, it was discovered that Andrea died of the plague in 1457 and Domenico had actually outlived him.
